Although her heart was set on the convent, St Rita was forced into an arranged marriage and was mistreated for 12 years. Her husband had many enemies and was eventually murdered. Her two sons wanted to avenge for their fathers death, but fell ill and died sparing them of mortal sin.
 
She entered the covent and followed a life of charity. As a sign of her love for Jesus, she shared in Jesus' suffering by accepting a thorn from His crucifx into her forehead - which never left until she died.
 
As a sign of her impending death and confirmation that her husband and sons entered eternal life, she was rewarded with a rose which miraculously grew in the middle of winter.
